Barrio San Jose, Cotacachi - Tunibamba Loop
IMG_20240703_101442210_MP.jpg

This walk starts at the corner of Calle Esmeraldas and the church in Barrio San Jose, Cotacachi.  The surfaces are mostly dirt roads and trails. Hikers can end the walk back where they started (5.6 km hike) or at the Tunibamba bus stop on the cobblestone road leading back to Cotacachi (4 km hike).   The advantage of stopping in Tunibamba is you will avoid dogs. If you walk back to Barrio San Jose, you will pass about 50 barking, sometimes aggressive dogs. Also, this part of the hike is on a cobblestone road.

The hike starts at a small creek. After crossing the creek, you will slowly climb through a bucolic field. There's a nursery operation at the top ( marked by white and orange fence posts). Turn right and exit the nursery through a large open gate. Walk down the road for about 500 meters and turn left onto a small trail. Stay on the trail for 380 meters, then turn left at the irrigation ditch and walk uphill until you reach a reservoir, turn right. Stay left at next intersection (in 200 m), then stay right until you reach Tunibamba village. Walk downhill to the wide cobblestone road. At this point, you can wait for a bus/taxi or turn right and walk back to Barrio San Jose (1.6 km).

Turn right and walk up this trail for about 800 meters, then turn left. After a short uphill, you will go down into a gentle valley. Turn left where indicated by your KML path. Continue following this path up through farmland and forest. You will meander across abandoned fields for about 1  km.
